Big applause for plastics innovators in Amsterdam

No less than seven industry innovators received an award at yesterday’s Plastics Recycling Europe Show in Amsterdam. Prizes recognised leaders in technology, products as well as recycling advocates.

There were ‘hundreds’ of entrees for the second edition of the Plastics Recycling Awards Europe. The panel of judges was impressed by the quality of the work developed by companies and individuals, according to Ton Emans. The PRE president and fellow judge offered his heartfelt congratulations to ‘outstanding innovations’ provided by brands like Volvo and Erema.

Who are the winners of 2019?

  • Recycling Machinery Innovation: Cascade Extrusion System COREMA by Interesoh and Erema
  • Product Technology Innovation: REC-NIR-BLACK by Ampacet
  • Automotive, Electrical or Electronic Product: Volvo Recycled Plastics Demo Car by Volvo
  • Plastic Packaging Product: Garçon Wines sustainable 100% rPET by flat wine bottle
  • Plastics Recycling Ambassador: Gian De Belder of Procter & Gamble
  • Household & Leisure Product: PBD Collection Bag by Cedo
  • Building & Construction Product: MPO Easy Channel by Multiport

The winners each received a trophy made from a blend of 3D printed plastics, recycled ABS plastic car dashboards, and compressed HDPE bottle caps. The latter were salvaged during an ocean clean-up mission.

Thanks to technology

The Corema Cascade Extrusion System is an extrusion line for mechanical recycling of post-consumer thermoplastics. Interseroh created it in partnership with Erema. The solution was described as ‘the most innovative combination of processing technologies’ that delivers cost-effective recycling of post-consumer plastic to produce high quality plastic material.

In recent years, black packaging waste has caused problems in recycling streams. Ampacet Corp observed that the material cannot be detected by the near-infrared (NIR) sorting systems installed at most recycling plants. The firm therefore developed black masterbatches that contain no carbon black pigment. Doing so renders them NIR transparent, which means they can be properly detected and sorted.

170 components

Emans pointed out that the XC60 car developed by Volvo includes 170 recycled plastic components that replaced virgin plastics. This counts as a ‘unique accomplishment’ in the automotive sector, judges found.

Meanwhile, the plastic collection bag by Cedo contains more than 90% certified post-consumer recycled plastic of which more than 40% is flexible packaging.

The 100% rPET flat wine bottle by Garçon Wines and RPC M&H Plastics is an innovative mail order wine bottle that fits through letter boxes. This product ‘fits perfectly’ with the spirit of our times, according to the judges. ‘The packaging combines convenience and cost-effectiveness with a lightweight sustainable design, ticking all the boxes required in packaging today.’

The face of sustainability

Not least, Gian De Belder has become ‘the face of Procter & Gamble’s commitment to sustainable development’, judges announced. He has ‘worked tirelessly’ to develop solutions to problems such as the recyclability of Opaque and Difficult to Recycle household and personal care PET bottles. He is also the project leader of Procter & Gamble’s Holy Grail project, which is developing industry-wide system for watermark and tracer technology.
