Tradebe awarded NHS Scotland waste contract

Environmental services firm Tradebe has been awarded a 10-year contract to collect and dispose of healthcare waste from healthcare providers across Scotland.

The contract was previously held by Lanarkshire-based Healthcare Environmental Services, which ceased trading at the end of 2018 (see letsrecycle.com story).

As part of the contract with NHS Scotland the company has announced that it will be investing in a “purpose built waste treatment facility” in the Glasgow region.

The service covers all NHS healthcare waste producers in Scotland, including hospitals, GP surgeries, dentists, and pharmacies.

Tradebe said in a statement that the contract it signed with NHS Scotland will cover “consultancy, collection, transport, recycling, treatment and final disposal of healthcare waste from 18 NHS Health Boards in Scotland”.

Contract

NHS Scotland confirmed that the new agreement began earlier this month (1 February). It added that it will be working closely with NHS Boards, contractors, Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and the Scottish Government to ensure effective delivery of clinical waste management services throughout the start of the contract.

In a statement, NHS Scotland said: “There are several new requirements built into the new arrangements. This includes provision for national reporting and data management.”

Tradebe was one of several firms appointed by the government to take in additional volumes of clinical waste in England in light of Environment Agency action at Healthcare Environmental over storage of hazardous waste (see letsrecycle.com story).

Tradebe specialises in the handling and treatment of hazardous wastes from 25 sites across the UK. The company made two acquisitions in 2018, purchasing the Avanti Environmental Group from Stericycle in June, after also acquiring Labwaste in January 2018 (see letsrecycle.com story).
